Andrea Lippai, Petra Bánhidi and Josip Bartulovic

Everyone knows Sleeping Beauty, whether from the story of the Brothers Grimm, the Tchaikovsky ballet or the Walt Disney cartoon adaptation. However, looking behind the sweet figure of the almond eyed little girl, there is a less charming story revealing itself: the first blood, the hibernated girl, the sleeping court, the threat of the prick from the spindle, the alarming images of a dream that seems like eternity, the bewilderment on waking from a hundred-year-long coma, and waiting for a kiss that could save the world from emotions becoming bland. Ballet Pécs: Otello
It was in the last months of 1884 that Verdi started the composition work of the opera, and he finished it in just under a year. He then decided to make the title of the piece Othello rather than Iago, since “Iago is the demon, who sets everything in motion, but it is Othello who acts.” The Shakespearean drama provides adequate room and opportunity for the slow development of jealousy. However, the form of expression is more condensed in the opera. Read more...

The 6th station of the Living Martin Archives series is the Transylvanian Gyimes, which lies along the thousand-year-old borderline. From the middle of the 70’s Zoltán Zsuráfszky often visited Gyimes, which used to be an unexplored area both ethnographically and from the point of view of collecting dances as well. The beauty of the land and the ancient, archaic characteristics of the dance enthralled the young dancer and collector, making him a true enthusiast who could be the first to master and learn by observation the dance culture of the local Hungarians. Babel
ARTUS - Gábor Goda Company
The performance deals with today’s confusion of words, the wisdom of the body and the poetry of touches. The meaning of the word “Babel” has been: to confuse. The essence of the biblical story is that with the tower-idol we intend to gain name and special, divine power, however, this will of hubris, this human arrogance will not remain without punishment. God confuses the languages of people so as not to understand one another. Nevertheless, the interpretation of this “ostentatious” tower building covers a more ancient and deeper meaning of the name, since the word Babel originally means “God’s Gate”. Read more...
